Please note that the Town of BWG does not perform marriage ceremonies. It is your responsibility to arrange the marriage ceremony of your choice.

Not getting married in Ontario?
You will need to apply for a marriage licence in the province you are planning on getting married in.

Not over the age of 18?
Please note: Both parents or a guardian must accompany each applicant that is 16 or 17 years of age to the appointment and must complete a consent form. They will also be required to show a valid government issued piece of identification. The signature of both parents is required except if either of the following are applicable:
- The mother, father or both parents is/are deceased
- That the mother, father or both parents is/are a patient in a psychiatric facility or a facility under the Development Services Act
- That the attending parent lives separate and apart from the child’s mother or father and has proof of custody of the child requesting a marriage licence

Don't have official proof of divorce?
You must submit official proof of the divorce when you apply for a marriage licence. This can be the original or a court-certified copy of a:
- Certificate of divorce
- Final decree, or
- Final judgement
A certified copy of either of the above divorce documents may be obtained from the court office that granted the divorce. A Decree Nisi or a Divorce Order will not be accepted. All documents will be returned. If you do not know where your divorce was granted you can contact the Central Registry of Divorce Proceedings (link is external) or 1-613-957-4519.

Don't have official proof of divorce outside of Canada?
If you were divorced outside of Canada, you will need to provide certain documents to prove that you are no longer married. The Office of the Registrar General for the province of Ontario needs to validate these documents and provide authorization in order for you to get a marriage licence.
Once you have received your Foreign Divorce Authorization from the Office of the Registrar General you can apply for a marriage licence. For more information, contact the Office of the Registrar General Marriage Office at 1-800-461-2156 (toll-free) or visit Service Ontatrio (link is external).
